Abstract

Ankle arthrodesis and ankle arthroplasty are surgical modalities for end-stage ankle problems such as ankle osteoarthritis, neuropathic arthropathy, tumor resection, and salvage for failed open reduction-internal fixation
(ORIF) on each indication. Even a patient with a failed total ankle arthroplasty can be salvaged by ankle arthrodesis,
but not that arthrodesis is superior to other techniques. Ankle arthrodesis itself can be done by open surgery or arthroscopy. Fixation used can be internal or external. We report an 18-year-old patient with an open fracture
with severe comminution and contaminants. The patient underwent ankle arthrodesis using a locally made Ilizarov
apparatus. The final follow-up results were satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes despite a leg length
discrepancy of 2 cm. Common complications in ankle arthrodesis are nonunion, malunion, soft tissue problems,
and infection. Special consideration is needed for the patient to whom the procedure will be performed and the
surgeon's special skills
