Abstract

Rotator cuff (RC) tear, commonly found in orthopaedic settings, is often progressive with fat infiltration.1,2 Muscle microstructures in RC tear change gradually, showing myofibril lysis, degeneration, and fiber replacement with adipose tissue. These processes lead to muscle atrophy and fat infiltration in chronic RC tear.2 Together with fibrosis, atrophy, and fatty infiltration are the characteristics of RC degeneration. The degeneration produced is persistent and irreversible, even with surgical repair.3 Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was found to be involved in RC injury.2,4 The inflammation and oxidative stress had been indicated to have a role in RC degeneration (Figure 1).3
